Study of the emergence of strong nation states, absolutism vs. anarchy in France, the rise of Parliament in England, the Thirty Years' War in the Germanies, and, in Europe, generally, the scientific revolution. Attention is given to the creative forces of the period - its writers, artists, thinkers, and theorists. 3 credits.
