The Problem of "Engagement" in Contemporary French Literature Emphasis is on novels, essays, and poetry of the most important writers of the period, from World War I through World War II and its aftermath. The writings of Malraux, Saint-Exupery, Eluard, Sartre, and Camus among others, attempt to deal with the problems of a socially, economically, and politically troubled Europe, and to find a suitable human response to them. 3 credits
