Prerequisites: CSP 550 and department permission Overview of the historical issues and conceptual principles in classifying mental and emotional disorders using the DSM-IV-TR multiaxial coding system, applying processes and princliples in making differential diagnosis, noting signs and symptoms of the diagnostic categories, and using diagnostic concepts and terminology. Current research/issues regarding the diagnostic categoires and theories of etiology and prevention. Practice in conducting an effective diagnos- tic interview, including mental status examination and bio- psychosocial history, as well as formulation of case conceptualizaion and treatment plan based upon diagnostic impressions. The impact of racial, ethnic, and cultural heritage issues on the diagnostic process and application of counseling theories and empiracally supported techniques for treating specific diagnoses. 3 credits.
