Three hours lecture and three hours laboratory per week. Prerequisites: A "C-" or better in BIOL 208, BIOL 223SI or CHEM 311SI, and CHEM 104; additionally, BIOL 204 and 207 are required for biology majors with senior status. The course includes a detailed examination of the principles of microbiology, including the structure, function and growth of bacteria and viruses, with emphasis on health, environmental and industrial applications. Formal scientific papers of laboratory results will be required with a minimum of 6,000 words.
