Description: This course examines Baroque and Rococo art from a global perspective. It addresses the origins of Baroque art and architecture in Italy and its spread across Europe to Spain, France, the Netherlands, Germany, and Austria, as well as the circulation of the style beyond Europe to places such as India, China, the Philippines, Turkey, and the Americas. Themes such as colonialism and westernization, global trade networks and commerce, religion and religious reform, intercultural dialogues, and the hybridization of local styles with international artistic currents in the 17th and 18th centuries will be explored.
