Review of basic statistical mechanics: harmonic oscillator, Bose and Fermi gases interacting classical gas. Basic phenomenology of phase transitions, Ising model, exact solutions, mean-field theory. Thermal shape fluctuations of polymers and membranes. Dynamics of thermal fluctuations: detailed balance, Langevin equation for harmonic oscillator, diffusion, Monte Carlo calculations. Prerequisite: Permission of the department chair.
