The focus of this course is on a sociological approach to the study of mass media. We examine the social structure of the industry and significant influences (particularly legal/political) on mass media. We will examine how the media represents the social world, how issues are framed, the ideology that informs information use, and media's influence on our ideas and opinions. The course will also explore the media's use or misuse of social science data, including various barriers to the effective and accurate use of social science data in the media and the consequences of the use and misuse of social science data.
