This course considers the lyrics of Bob Dylan in terms of their poetic techniques and verbal effects, and uses recorded performances to analyze how the words operate within the confines of musical structures. It will examine various poetic influences on Dylan's lyrics such as anonymous ballads, the blues, and literary poetry by Villon, Rimbaud, Dylan Thomas, Ginsberg, and others, and poetic movements such as Symbolism, Surrealism, Confessional Poetry, and the Beats. Students will compose original, exploratory poems that combine musicality, intellect, and imagination, making use of the techniques and poetic devices learned in this class.
