Provides an opportunity for students to achieve mastery in a medical coding area of specialty. Students may choose from a variety of specialty specific categories, such as Cardiology, Orthopedic Surgery, Family Practice, Hematology and Oncology, etc. Both theoretical and practical issues are presented and discussed. A review of ICD-9-CM coding guidelines and E/M coding procedures as they relate to the topic covered will be provided. Authentic medical charts will be coded and discussed. The course is designed to prepare students for national certification in the area of specialty studied. Prerequisite/Restriction: Instructor Permission Repeatable for credit
