Fulfills a program elective for all Biology majors. Covers the evolution of vertebrate design, surveying the tissue types that have changed to allow vertebrates to perform specific functions; emphasizing bones and muscles along with special tissues such as feathers, fur, and scales; and highlighting comparisons between groups of vertebrates to reveal different evolutionary pathways. Successful completers will clearly understand and be able to explain major evolutionary trends among vertebrates as well as specific instances where particular adaptations have allowed special functions to develop very efficiently like flying, digging, deep diving, and great running speed.
