The five critical elements of the WCCC nursing program caring, competency, communication, critical thinking, and commitment serve as the framework for this course. This course introduces the student to the role of the professional nurse as provider of care when working with childbearing individuals, the newborn, infant, child and family. Emphasis is placed on identifying alteration in basic human needs and applying the nursing process to the promotion, restoration, or maintenance of health throughout the phases of the childbearing process. Common health problems of newborns and of women in each phase of childbearing are explored. Health promotion, disease prevention, and care of the infant and child with common health problems are studied. Opportunities for practice of related skills are provided in campus laboratory and a variety of clinical and community settings to provide the student with opportunities to apply concepts.
