Prerequisite: sophomore status. This course examines the role of memory in shaping historical, literary, artistic, and other responses to major genocides committed since the turn of the 20th century. The course will examine works produced by victims, perpetrators, resistors, by-standers, up-standers, and others, with emphasis on the genocides of Armenia, Rwanda, East Timor and the Sudan, and especially the Nazi Holocaust. The course relies on accounts of responses to genocidal events by individuals and groups from multiple viewpoints, and is intended to enable students to better understand the nature of this criminal act, its roots, its manifestations, and the need to prevent it.
