Literature and culture of the Middle Ages with a focus on the 13th and 14th centuries. Francis of Assisi, Laudi, the Sicilian poets, the dolce stil novo, and Dante's minor works are examined, as well as Boccaccio's Decameron and Petrarch's Rime. Works are considered in relation to feudal society, the Church, the communes, and other medieval political structures. Advanced Literature Courses The prerequisite for the following courses is Advanced Review of Modern Italian (ITAL-UA 30) when the course is conducted in Italian, or permission of the instructor. It is recommended that Readings in Medieval and Renaissance Literature (ITAL-UA 115) or Readings in Modern Italian Literature (ITAL-UA 116) be taken before any advanced literature courses taught in Italian.
