Explores the importance of cultural settings, the nature of local funding schemes and production practices, and deeper stylistic continuities with the past. Focuses on one nation's productions (including emigre filmmakers), considering their history, innovations, and meanings in a world in which the idea of nation is increasingly challenged by such factors as immigration, labor outsourcing, and multiculturalism. Examines film's relationship with other media forms, such as television and social media. Students taking graduate version complete additional assignments.
