This course traces the demise of the czars, and the road to World War I, communist revolution, and civil conflict. Topics include the Soviet state's effort under Lenin and Stalin to create a modern utopia in Russia, the emergence of dictatorialism in Soviet politics, and there impact of World War II on modern Russia. The class ends with an assessment of the "collapse of communism" and its meaning for a post-Cold War world. Prerequisites of HIS 2 or permission of instructor is required.
