A historical examination of major events and developments in 20th century world history, such as the First and Second World Wars, the Holocaust, the Cold War, student protest movements in the 1960s, feminism, and ethnic strife in the 1990's, through the lens of cinema. The course will investigate how artists have used the medium to articulate their views about the past, the present, or the future, as well as the impact of film on society and politics. The course material will include films, screenplays, reviews, and scholarly literature. Prerequisites of HIS 2 or permission of instructor is required.
