The course presents basic geologic problems associated with civil engineering and provides a survey of environmental hazards in geology, such as the impact of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and flood and coastal storm damage. Topics also include the relationship between rock materials and soils, the various uses of rock materials in engineering and the engineering properties of rocks, foundation survey methods, principles of soil mechanics as related to engineering structure, and subsurface exploration methods. Prerequisite of (GLY 1 or ERS 2) is required.
