Review of West African origins; New World settlement patterns, social life, and culture; discussion of the Atlantic slave trade, the development of capitalism and plantation slavery, and the origins of racism. Three lecture hours a week for one semester. Only one of the following may be counted: African and African Diaspora Studies 357C, American Studies 321 (Topic: African American History to 1860), 321E, History 357C. Partially fulfills legislative requirement for American History. Prerequisite: Upper-division standing.
