The development of American landscape painting from 1800 through 1900, especially in New York State and New England. Covers the work of painters of the Hudson River School in the artistic, intellectual, and literary context of American Romanticism and the idea of America as the Promised Land. Makes use of local museum collections at the New York Historical Society, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum of the Smithsonian Institution.
