A comprehensive study of the gene in prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems. Analysis of the molecular anatomy of the chromosome, structure and organization of the genes and their regulatory regions, and protein (DNA interactions, transcriptional and post transcriptional control, RNA processing, and translation into proteins). Laboratory introduces various recombinant DNA techniques. Counts toward area 2. Lecture: 2 hours; lab: 4 hours. Laboratory fee. Pre-requisite: BIOL 3207C or BIOL 3513C or BIOL 4937C or CHEM 1376.
