This seminar will examine how cultural, structural, and political dynamics shape the process of reproduction in the contemporary United States. Topics to be discussed include: competing discourses and practices of childbirth; technologies of reproduction; issues of risk, choice, and responsibility; debates surrounding the "fitness" of mothers; the impact of law and institutional policies on the experiences of pregnancy, childbirth, and early motherhood; the meanings of pregnancy and childbirth; and variation in practices, norms, and experiences by race, class, gender, and sexuality.
