Emphasis on the interaction of global environment, national attributes and leadership characteristics in the formation of the foreign policies of both countries. Topics include the historical context of normalization, political discourse regarding human rights, the role of media, trade relations, the tension over the Taiwan strait, and cultural and educational exchange between China and the United States.
