Examines the growth of the genre and various trends in the form, from "local color" sketches to other-worldly tales, realism and experiments in modernism and postmodernism. Considers issues of structure, characterization, style, voice, as well as context. Authors include Edgar Allen Poe, Hawthorne, Chekhov, Chesnutt, Jewett, Twain, Hemingway, Joyce, Baldwin, O'Connor, Welty, Carver, Bambara, Munro and others. Prerequisite, one 100-level course or equivalent. Guttman.
