End of days, end of empire, end of the world as they knew it -- a focus on the apocalyptic in literature. Possible authors include Mary Shelley, William Butler Yeats, Cormac McCarthy, Ian McEwan, Matthew Arnold, Margaret Atwood, P.D. James and Kazuo Ishiguro. We will examine how these writers envision the end, whether it be on a personal or pandemic scale, and how the anxieties and issues of their times influenced these visions. (Writing-intensive.)
