Introduces the theoretical notions "sex work" and "emotional labor" (managing emotion of self and others), examines lives of sex workers and emotional laborers in depth, and investigates intersections of sex work and emotional labor, using case studies in Asia, America and elsewhere. Emphasizes critical analyses of the historical, structural and social contexts in which workers are situated, paying special attention to race/ethnicity, gender and class. Seminar requires an open mind, capacity to discuss taboo issues and self-evaluation of social biases. Prerequisite, one course in anthropology or women's studies. Maximum enrollment, 12. Chung.
