Explores moments of political and social violence in contemporary eastern and southern Africa. Efforts to promote peace-building and social justice in the aftermath of violent conflicts include creating institutions that will foster lasting peace, stability and reconciliation. In the context of South Africa and Rwanda, we will explore a variety of international and national mechanisms for pursuing peace-building and justice, including apologies, truth and reconciliation commissions, war crimes tribunals, reparations and reconstruction.
