An introduction to the materials of music and their interrelationships, with an emphasis on developing active listening skills, recognizing and comparing the elements of differing musical styles, and exploring cultural contexts and differing functions of music in diverse groups. Three subtopic areas are offered: Western Art Music - An exploration of the traditional Western classical music canon. Music in the United States - A broad approach that examines both American vernacular music (blues, jazz, folk, rock, pop, etc.) and the Western classical music canon. The History of American Popular Music - An in-depth exploration of American popular music.
