Socialist Realism of the 1930s to 1950s; masterpieces of the post-Stalin era in the1960s and ’70s; sex and violence of the Perestroika; new post-Soviet cinema. Films by such directors as Eisenstein, Pyryev, Romm, Tarkovsky, Mikhalkov, and Sokurov are studied and discussed within the political context. No knowledge of Russian required.
