This course examines the development and creation of an artistic tradition in America from pre-colonial times to the present. The focus is on the painting, drawing, sculpture and architecture of America and how it reflects who we are, what we value, and what we want to become at different points in our history, and from the perspectives of different groups and cultures. Economic, social, scientific, and philosophical ideas and traditions are linked to the form, topic, style, and meaning of the fine arts in America.
