Description:
This course will look across the history of 20th century art in order to investigate some of the key movements and criticism of which it is comprised. We will focus on a series of art historical texts chosen to introduce the central theories that characterize modernism and postmodernism in art history. Class participation and discussion will be essential components of the course; discussion will focus on the practice visual analysis and understanding approaches to art history. Both primary texts by artists and critics and secondary sources by art historians will be consulted, and images will be examined regularly in class. Theoretical texts will also be examined in order to familiarize ourselves with various art historical approaches such as formalism, social art history, feminism, theories of the avant-garde, conceptualism, and postmodernism.
