Description:
The twentieth century has witnessed unprecedented development in the design and construction of buildings and their settings. This lecture course offers a survey of modern architecture from the late nineteenth century to the present day and will address the diverse and rapidly changing character of architecture during the period. Emphasis will be placed on the work of leading designers and on detailed analysis of key buildings. Architects will include Sir Edwin Lutyens, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Antoni Gaudi, Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Mies Van der Rohe, Robert Venturi and Carlo Scarpa. The course will also address the broader theoretical and ideological concerns of twentieth century architectural debate. Students will be encouraged to relate their studies to twentieth-century architecture in Ireland and a number of site visits will be incorporated in the programme.
