The principal aim of this course is to give an acquaintance of Irish painting of the period from 1640 to 1950. The work of Irish painters both at home and abroad will be examined and comparisons will be made with contemporary work in a European context. The course will start by discussing 17th century artists who came to Ireland in the train of the Duke of Ormonde and will follow with an investigation of Irish portrait painters like Garret Morphy and James Latham. Other lectures cover the importance of the Dublin Society Schools, founded in 1746 as well as the great Irish 18th century landscape painters, like Thomas Roberts. Irish painting from 19th and twentieth centuries will cover history and genre painters, artists who travelled to France in the late nineteenth century, the academic tradition of William Orpen and an introduction to Irish modernist painters.
