AME 44099 Special Studies introduces the physical phenomena of sound as propagating compressive waves. The following topics are studied : 1. The speed of sound propagation, the spectral decomposition of sound, sound tones and broadband noise. 2. Sound measurements and the decibel scale. Filters. 3. The wave equation and the propagation of sound in free media. 4. Elementary solutions: plane waves, monopoles, dipoles and quadropoles. 5. Absorption, reflection, refraction and diffraction of sound. 6. Propagation of sound in ducts. 7. Room acoustics. 8. Aircraft noise. 9. The physics of musical instruments.
