This course is a study of microorganisms and their relationship to disease. This overview of the fundamentals of Microbiology includes historical aspects, cell structure, and the functions of microorganisms. Emphasis is placed on infectious disease, modes of transmission, infection control and their clinical application in surgery. Discussion is centered on the role of the Surgical Technologist regarding operating room techniques, infection control and sterilization, and disinfecting of supplies, instruments and the environment.
