This course focuses on the history and development of animation as an art form, with particular attention to works of significant innovation and expression. Topics include: the earliest cinematic practices; the first animated films, 1898-1928; sociological trends such as censorship and blacklisting of American animators; Japanese animation; the commerce of animation, including discussion of the studio system; involvement of the avant-garde with animation; animation from Europe; and the development of computer animation techniques.
