This course introduces the student to the complex organizational dynamics and structures that dictate the interaction among major components of the U.S. health care system along with the cultural beliefs and values, social factors, science and technology, economic forces, and political factors that have shaped the health care delivery system. This course also considers the ever growing global and diverse perspective of health care and introduces students to a multicultural perspective as it relates to developing professional competence in caring for individuals, families, groups, and communities with diverse cultural backgrounds. Culture is examined as a pervasive, determining "blueprint" for thought and action throughout the human health experience. Students will develop a vocabulary for understanding diversity as a concept that includes many different types of racial, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic categories. Patterns of human interaction that foster health and quality of life are analyzed, and health-destroying patterns of interaction (e.g., stereotyping, discrimination, and marginalization) are examined and submitted to moral and ethical reflection.
