This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of TAIKO, the Japanese style of drumming. Emphasis will be placed on the impact of KUMIDAIKO (ensemble drumming). Students will study the basic form and technique for this style of drumming as well as the philosophies behind it and the cultural context (focusing on diasporic contexts, especially Asian America), via course readings, audiovisual materials, and the students' experience of the technique in an eight-page journal to be turned in immediately after the final recital at the end of the semester. The course is highly hands-on; students will undergo physical training and should expect a workout at every class.
