This course examines the operations of the criminal justice system with general emphasis on the role and responsibility of a corrections officer. This 15 week course is designed to prepare a student for a career in the corrections field. It is a knowledge and skills based program. The course focuses on the legal basis for the corrections system, starting with a review of the United States Constitution; exploring the New York State Penal and Criminal Procedure Laws. It also covers those personal and professional skills necessary to each successful corrections officer. State certification is awarded upon successful completion. Student must be hired and sworn as a corrections officer. Thirty-two class hours, eight laboratory hours per week for 15 weeks. 22 Credits.
