An examination of the history, structure, and behavior of the police in American society and other selected countries/societies. Students will learn about the history of American policing, police practices, the relationship of the police system to the constitution and local and national society. Overall emphasis is on the description and analysis of the police as part of a culture's broader system of social control. Prerequisite: SOC 110 or 130 or consent of the instructor.
