Prerequisite:; MUS 232 with a grade of C or better, or equivalent. For B.A. majors and those whose major ensemble is jazz ensemble. Study of the harmonic language and formal designs of jazz and pop music in the first half of the twentieth century. This will include knowledge of the uses of harmony, song forms, keyboard skills, songwriting and performance. The course is structured along historical lines so a grounding in the musicological evolution of popular styles is also provided.
