The Geat Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) was a watershed in China's modern history. Over the course of a decade, Mao summoned the populace to battle "bourgeoisie" of the state by attacking various parts of the social, cultural and political structure. Outcome: Students will examine the Cultural Revolution from the perspectives of political, social, and cultural history, utilizing memoirs, oral histories, documentary and dramatized films, primary documents written by China's party leaders, and scholarly writings; come to understand these events not solely from the hindsight of post-reform China, but from the perspective of the times during which these events unfolded; and develop their own understandings of what these years meant for the shaping of modern China's state, economy, institutions, and citizens.
