Description:
This course will provide an introduction to popular cinema (Bollywood), as well as regional and parallel cinema, to arrive at an assessment of the link between culture and nationalism in modern South Asia. Outcome: Students will be introduced to political and socio-cultural issues including religious, gender, and caste identities as reflected in and refracted through South Asian cinema. We will lexamine the conventions of popular cinema in contrast to the "realism" of parallel cinema.
