Prerequisite: permission of chairperson. An exploration of the influence of the Italian Renaissance on the Spanish tradition: Garsilaso de la Vega, Herrera, San Juan de la Cruz, Fray Luis de León, Quevedo, Góngora and others. Outcome: Students will learn to recognize classical themes and rhetorical techniques, and to trace the development of such genres as epic, satire, and the lyric.
