This course covers the fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for fire fighters, using spatial information and software to map and analyze information associated with fire planning. Labs include hands-on experience with ArcGIS software in the subject areas of map making; scanning, georeferencing, and digitizing fire pre-plans; GIS data creation and management, and working with geoprocessing tools. This course provides the skills and knowledge to create basic spatial data and GIS maps, particularly with reference to fire pre-plans. Students also learn basic GIS skills, a foundation for further study in GIS or to pursue a GIS degree or certificate.
