This is an introductory course in legal and political philosophy, thematically organized around questions emerging from the Civil Rights Movement. Through readings and documentary film we will discuss the following topics: the concept of justice; violent oppression; the concept of law; the normative status of law; the difference between legal and moral obligation; the idea of legal rights; civil disobedience; the rule of law; and violent social protest. No prior coursework in philosophy is required.
