AS 171.214 - A survey of nuclear energy

Institution:
Johns Hopkins University
Subject:
Description:
Commercial nuclear power plants have operated in the US since the 1960's and currently generate about 20 of the net electric power. Yet they still incite extreme reaction from the public because of issues related to safety, nuclear waste and proliferation. This course provides an elementary description of fission physics and nuclear power generation with emphasis on the issues mentioned above. It also covers the two major approaches towards a fusion power reactor - magnetic and inertial confinement.
