Johns Hopkins University
Subject:
Description:
This interdisciplinary course will familiarize nursing and medical students with the use of Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) modalities in the delivery of health care. The course will introduce the students to the five categories of CAM identified by the National Institutes of Health, National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). Within these categories students will explore leading non-traditional therapeutic alternatives that consumers and health providers are using today, often in conjunction with conventional medicine. This practice of combining CAM and conventional medicine has been defined as Integrative Medicine. The safety and efficacy of these modalities/therapies will be examined through the latest research, guest practitioner presentations, small group learning, and experiential sessions. Critical thinking skills will be developed as students critique the literature. This course will allow students to develop the knowledge and attitudes necessary to communicate effectively with patients and the patient care team with respect to CAM and Integrative Medicine.
