This class will give students already fluent in Spanish the opportunity to practice their general as well as medical Spanish abilities in an atmosphere of Socratic discussion and active exchange of ideas based on weekly reading assignments. Topics discussed include but are not limited to: linguistic, cultural and ethical concerns of interpreters in a medical setting, legal and social responsibilities of interpreters in a medical setting, and review of current standards for interpreting (California and Massachusetts). Cultural Competence will also be extensively discussed and debated. This course may be offered online depending on enrollment. Pre-Requisities: Successful completion of Intermediate Spanish for Health Professionals or permission of the instructor.
