Overview to enable students to identify, describe and understand the theories, methods and goals of linguistic anthropology. Emphasis is placed on the relationships of language to culture and cognition from an anthropological perspective. Topics include language origins, descriptive linguistics, language and cognition, synchronic and diachronic variation, language use in cultural context, discourse and pragmatics, writing systems and literacy.
