Examination of Western imperialism and the introduction of modernity in the Muslim Middle East and North Africa in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the resultant changes in gender roles and expectations. Course will end with examples of Islamist and more secular women moving toward common goals and aspirations in the early twenty-first century.
